چکیده

In noncooperative networks, resources are shared among selfish users, which optimize their individual performance measure. We consider the generic and practically important case of atomic resource sharing, in which traffic bifurcation is not implemented, hence each user allocates its whole traffic to one of the network resources. We analyze topologies of parallel resources within a game-theoretic framework and establish several fundamental properties. We prove the existence of and convergence to a Nash equilibrium. For a broad class of residual capacity performance functions, an upper bound on the number of iterations till convergence is derived. An algorithm is presented for testing the uniqueness of the equilibrium. Sufficient conditions for achieving a feasible equilibrium are obtained. We consider extensions to general network topologies. In particular, we show that, for a class of throughput-oriented cost functions, existence of and convergence to a Nash equilibrium is guaranteed in all topologies. With these structural results at hand, we establish the foundations of a design and management methodology, that enables to operate such networks efficiently, in spite of the lack of cooperation among users and the restrictions imposed by atomic resource sharing. In particular, we study various problems pertaining to capacity allocation, pricing, and admission control, and show that their solutions are substantially different from the ones for traditional networks.

Competitive Resource Sharing Based on Game Theory in Cooperative Relay Networks

© 2009 Guopeng Zhang et al. 89 ABSTRACT⎯This letter considers the problem of resource sharing among a relay and multiple user nodes in cooperative transmission networks. We formulate this problem as a sellers’ market competition and use a noncooperative game to jointly consider the benefits of the relay and the users. We also develop a distributed algorithm to search the Nash equilibrium, the s...

Quality of service provision in noncooperative networks with diverse user requirements

This paper studies the quality of service (QoS) provision problem in noncooperative networks where applications or users are selfish and routers implement generalized processor sharing based packet scheduling. We formulate a model of QoS provision in noncooperative networks where users are given the freedom to choose both the service classes and traffic volume allocated, and heterogenous QoS pr...

An efficient symmetric polynomial-based key establishment protocol for wireless sensor networks

An essential requirement for providing secure services in wireless sensor networks is the ability to establish pairwise keys among sensors. Due to resource constraints on the sensors, the key establishment scheme should not create significant overhead. To date, several key establishment schemes have been proposed. Some of these have appropriate connectivity and resistance against key exposure, ...

Best-Effort Resource Sharing by Users with QoS Requirements

Abslract—Communicationnetworks typically provide a basic best-effort service category, in which resources are shared by concurrent users. As no QoS guarantees are provided, a user will submit to best-effort service only if the expected QoS meets some minimal, user-specific, requirements. This results in an inherent conflict of interest among users, which we capture througlh a dynamic noncoopera...

Potential games for energy-efficient resource allocation in multipoint-to-multipoint CDMA wireless data networks

The problem of noncooperative resource allocation in a multipoint-tomultipoint cellular network is considered in this paper. The considered scenario is general enough to represent several key instances of modern wireless networks such as a multicellular network, a peer-to-peer network (interference channel), and a wireless network equipped with femtocells. In particular, the problem of joint tr...
